Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in beauty and style. Hope you have a nice stay!

Tom Ford // Shimmer Shots

Tom Ford // Shimmer Shots

By sheer luck, I got my hands on the brand new Shimmer Shots from Tom Ford. I walked into Bloomingdale's to "just look" and when I asked the MUA at the TF counter about the Shimmer Shots he said, "Hang on - they're in the building somewhere. We just have to find the box." And hung on, I did. As luck would have it, Bloomingdale's was having a $15 off $150, so I got a wee discount too when I threw in the Lip Lacquer and Lip Color in Sweet Mystery (pictured above).

Each Shimmer Shot is 0.5 fl. oz for $45. They come in the twist-up pump like their Bronzing Primer and some of their other liquid products. There are only two shades available: a highlighting shade called Spin Spin Sugar and a bronzing shade called Lust For Life.

The scent in each is just like that of the TF Skin Illuminator in Fire Lust. It not floral or sweet, and not quite chemically. It's not really perfumed, but just sort of makeup scented. It's very faint, and as someone who's pretty sensitive to scents, it didn't bother me at all.

The texture is smooth without a silicone feel. It's not quite as moussey as the TF Bronzing Primer, but is thicker than the Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops.

What makes this product standout is effect it gives the skin. The Cover FX Custom Enhancer drops are a bit much for me. I feel like I have to be really careful when using those otherwise I look like the Tin Man. But these Shimmer Shots give the perfect glow without too much metallic shininess.

The most comparable product that I have in my collection are the Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheers. The Fluid Sheers are just that - more fluid than the Shimmer Shots, and so their effect is more subtle. Comparing the No. 2 Fluid Sheer to the highlighting Shimmer Shot, you can see how the Fluid Sheer is a little warmer in tone where the Shimmer Shot is a little more pinky pearly. Both blend beautifully on the skin, but the Shimmer Shot gives just a little more oompf... but not as much as Cover FX. I should also mention the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector. I only have the color Moonstone in the liquid version, and I like it very much. For some reason, I never reach for it. The texture is a teensy bit thicker than the shimmer shot and from what I could tell the look it gives it a bit more metallic. The Shimmer Shots have a more "wet" glowy look. It actually reminds me a bit of the effect the VB x Estee Lauder Morning Aura Illuminating Creme gives - a sort of sweaty sexy look. And Becca's is more metallic and seems to highlight flaws in my skin, which is probably why I don't reach for it.

For the bronzer shade, Lust For Life, the MUA at the counter applied it on my cheeks with a brush and to contour a bit and it gave me the perfect glow. I had on zero makeup and it added all I needed to look a little more healthy and gave my face more dimension.

I also tried dabbing both products on with my fingertips, but it definitely goes on more beautifully with a dense blush brush. The MUA used the Tom Ford brush, but I played around with the Morphe E34 brush and it worked really well!

I have the same thoughts comparing this Shimmer Shot to the other bronzer-type liquids I had in my collection. The No. 10 Fluid Sheer is much more sheer and the color is more orange-y for me when I'm on the paler side. (It's hard to tell on my arm swatches.) And the Cover FX drops are VERY intense. I also compared it to the TF Fire Lust Skin Illuminator and the Bronzing Primer, but those are such different products. The Shimmer Shots are the most comparable in texture and scent to Fire Lust, but Fire Lust is so peach and warm in tone. (I enjoy adding that to foundation in the Summer for extra glow.) And the Bronzing Primer has a mousse-like texture and is a great base, sort of like the Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel or The Estee Edit Beam Team Bronze.

After having the Shimmer Shots applied on my bare skin at about 1pm, there was no fading, separating or other bad surprises when I looked in the mirror at about 5pm.

All-in-all, I would say go for the TF Shimmer Shots if you're looking for a product that works alone or with foundation and gives you an instant glow. The GA Fluid Sheers are much more subtle. The Cover FX Enhancer Drops are way over the top and could be for you if you're looking for something super high shine.

I hope that was helpful! Let me know if you picked this up and what your thoughts are!
